Just for fun I posted this little article about trying to buy an election, its votes that count-not how much money you spend.

Giuliani's $50-million delegate

The failed campaign of Rudolph W. Giuliani can claim one distinction: the worst bang for the buck of any delegate winner in presidential politics history.

The former New York mayor, who dropped his Republican bid for the presidency this week, disclosed Thursday in a filing with the Federal Election Commission that he raised $58.5 million and spent $48.8 million in 2007.

With his donors' money, Giuliani captured a single national delegate, in Nevada. At that rate, it would have taken close to $60 billion in spending to capture the 1,191 delegates needed to win the nomination.

HESPERIA — Raising $850,000 in just his first year in office, San Bernardino County 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt said he has proven he has strong backing from county and High Desert supporters.

Despite having such a large war chest, Mitzelfelt has been particularly careful about how he spends campaign funds.

According to campaign contribution documents, Mitzelfelt still has a $709,000 cash balance.

“I’m very pleased with our fundraising efforts so far, despite the weakened economy,” Mitzelfelt said.

His contributors range from developers and Indian tribes to doctors and local attorneys.

Campaign documents show that Mitzelfelt has also garnered the support of San Bernardino County-based donors, including some of the county’s deputy sheriffs, deputy district attorneys and firefighters.

“This overwhelming showing of financial support puts Supervisor Mitzelfelt in a strong position to beat back any possible challenge,” said William Abernathie, president of Safety Employees Benefit Association.

So far, only Barstow City Councilman Joe Gomez has announced intentions to run against Mitzelfelt this fall.

Brad Mitzelfelt's response to the Recall Petition
  
 
  Every single allegation in this recall petition is outrageously false and groundless. Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt helped pass local laws barring sex offenders from within 300 feet of schools and parks or from operating ice cream trucks. He created a team within the Sheriff's Department to track sex offenders who enter our county. He has led successful efforts to crack down on gangs, and he established a program to deport illegal aliens criminals from High Desert jails.

Supervisor Mitzelfelt has worked to ensure that officials who violate the public trust are removed from office.

Brad is making sure that new jails, fire stations, libraries and other High Desert infrastructure projects avoid delays from the economic downturn. He also helped establish the new aviation mechanics training school at Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville. And he recently co-founded the Inland Empire Economic Recovery Corporation to help deal the rampart home foreclosures. Since his military service in Operation Desert Storm, Brad Mitzelfelt has dedicated his life to public service. He has worked tirelessly to make the High Desert a better place to raise his family and yours. Please reject this dishonest recall smear campaign that could cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
